Customer problem

I am an e-Commerce business looking for an accounting solution that integrates with QBO. But, current product solutions on the market are pricey and don’t fit all my needs.

What we built

An omni-channel connector that enables effortless accounting with QBO, by automatically importing sales data for these e-Commerce channels: Amazon, eBay, Shopify.

Why is this interesting?

Commerce was a brand new product space, so there was much to be learned and capitalize on.
This was an opportunity to learn about a different type of accounting, focusing on e-commerce.
We got to work with industry professionals who to ensure compliancy in the experience.

Research themes

“e-Commerce Accounting” is just everyday Accounting
- We had assumptions that there may be difference in how customers viewed the two, but in reality it was all the same.
Our information architecture was not intuitive
- Due to the existing structure of QBO, we were restricted to product areas that were new to customers. Leading to buried workflows that were easily missed.
We need to lean more into guardrails
- The entire experience had too much room for error, and we needed to rethink how to prevent mistakes due to a complicated accounting workflow.

App connections reside in "App transactions," unlike the usual bank feeds SMBs are accustomed to, creating a challenge for the team.

Each connection has unique line items, necessitating the design of a scalable template accommodating three or more apps.

Returning to the bank feed, a customer would locate a corresponding “match” from their bank to avoid duplicate entries.

The chart of accounts, housed in advanced settings, allows customers to map payments to various tax line accounts.

This challenging and highly collaborative project was one of my favorite work experiences. I had to deepen my understanding of accounting more than ever before. Leaning on my PMs, I gained valuable insights into customer problems, ensuring I had the necessary resources to succeed for myself, the team, and the customer. I was fortunate to be surrounded by exceptionally knowledgeable individuals who patiently explained complex accounting and tax scenarios. #BlessedByTheBest
